Well first of all I would like to thank the person who opened this thread

We all know that they are very bad for the enviroment but in my opinion there are two options

    ban them all

    or

invent a patio heater that is much more enviromentally freindly

Hi xthenapster and welcome to Footprint Friends Smile

I think that if we are serious about changing behaviour - we need to have a hard line approach to the environment. When you say it out loud, heating 'outdoor' spaces where there is no insulation, doors to close etc is ridiculous AND the damage to the environment is alarming. We have a garden heater that is rusting away in the garden unused - I used to think it was cool - now I'm thinking it's silly and embarrassing. It will never be used again.

Ok so they do keep you warm outside - but so does a jumper. Also it's only really effective for anyone sitting right next to it - so yeh a bit rubbish really.

Woah! That is alot of energy. I think it's disgusting selling patio heaters. If I came across with someone that happened to have a patio heater I would tell them to take it apartSuper Angry

Breaking them up does seem a wasteCrying.

I would take it apart, take out all the heating stuff in it and turn it into a garden light. Bit of a novelty thing and would work a treat to illuminate the garden at night. With energy saving bulbs, of course.Wink

    Great idea Idea...

How else can all those thousands of existing patio heaters be re-used or altered? without melting them down.

    Any more ideas?

With a bit of chopping about you could:

    -remove the heating equipment

    -chop it down to size

-remove the top, flip it upside down and reatach it

-voila your own recycled bird bath!!
