Eco-Dude: Hey anyone knows if phones are connected with climate change etc. post in as soon as you can!
Phones are bad for climate change - mainly because they are so disposable.
They also have a lot of precious metals in them and they take a lot of energy to manufacture and sell.
The real problem with mobile phones is the quantity of them and the rate at which they go out of fashion or are replaced. Apparently 90% of Britons own a handset - I'm not sure what population figure they used for this but if we use the population as 60,776,238 (July 2007 est) that's 54,698,614 phones!
How many does your family have? including the old ones in the kitchen draw?
Any one else have any comments about phones?

Hiya Eco Dude,
Scientists are investigating this as the radiation used to get a mobile phone signal is microwave radiation the same radiation we use to cook food in a microwave.
Scientists think there is a low risk of this causing cancer but they say it is best using the ALARA principle which means use your phone as little a possible.
We've just done this topic in science.
PS. Back to school tomorrow so I am going now to do a case study on Global Warming.
thanks Eco-Warrior!
For all those people out there who have too many mobiles. Here's a good little website:
http://www.envirofone.com
Its recycling your phone - except you get cash for it. So essentially your selling your old phone and know its going to be recycled!!
In an average persons life time you will go through at least 13 mobile phones. Worrying fact. Who heres already gone through that many??

NO WAY...
ONLY 13 phones in a life time!
It is a sad state and one which I hope is changing but planed obsolesce by manufacturers or perceived obsolesce by us the consumer of things like phones is just way too short. It is not sustainable.
The tariff we have gives us a FREE phone upgrade every 12 months!!!! whats the point in that? I don't need a new phone but I am forced to think I am missing out on something if I don't take it up!
Love your site though and I will definitely be chopping in all our old phones.
I hear somewhere that Nokia are making a phone made entirly out of recycled products! good start..
Yeah Rich - Nokia have a phone called the "Nokia Remade" its just recently been revealed as a non functioning concept phone at the moment, so they actually exist and you can hold one but as yet they don't make calls.
They're made from 100% recycled materials like metals from upcycled aluminum cans, plastics from drink bottles to form the chassis, and the rubber key mats are provided by old car tyres.
here's a minute video about it...
One thats due to be available soon is the Nokia 3110 Evolve - the phone does not look any different really to many other phones but
it supposedly has Eco plus points like...
Here's a video to show what it looks like...

By the way - I don't work for Nokia
thanks I might just recycle my phone.
Im gettin a new phone for my b'day so im gonna reycle my old one!
My current phone is about five years old. I have had to replace the battery once, but otherwise it is still as good as it was when it was new. It was handed down to me by my dad because he got a work one, and I wanted one but was too miserly to buy a new one. Very uncool. Very Green.
