    blackle.com

What do you think of Blackle.com?

Taken from their site: 'In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.'

Have a look for yourself - a green (black) scam or a great idea?

I know that our home power use drops when the TV programme had a dark picture and goes up when the image is very light and bright - but is this the same for all screens? Confused

Its a interesting idea. I'm interested in how different types of screens would react. A CRT monitor works in a completely different way to a LCD monitor. But the idea behind it could work. It would require more research.Hmm

One thing i do know is that you can invert the colours on a Apple Mac, looks cool as well. Just press CTL+ALT+apple+8 to invert it. To undo the invert just press the hotkey again.Wink

    FOUND IT!!

Works in windows xp and windows vista. Looks slightly odd but once you get used to it, its not just usable but looks good.

all you have to do is press ALT+SHIFT+PRINT SCREEN. (Remember if use a laptop you may need to use the FN key for the print screen.) Either way looks good and very simple. It says your turning on high contrast when you do it but its essentially inverting to colours.

Put this post up whilst using inverted colours. YAY!!Big Smile

    WOW - looks pretty cool!

The Footprint Friends site looks cool too!

If designers created web-sites to look like this what would the impact be on energy saved on a global level?

    Re: blackle.com

Only CRT displays use more energy to display brighter things.
For everything else, it is completely false that a black display uses less energy than a white page. The backlight on an LCD is on for the entire LCD regardless of what is being shown. The black pixels are only black because the LCD blocks out light.

So if you have a one one of those huge computer monitors that are twice the depth as their width then blackle.com will be good to use.

However CRT monitors use more energy in general than an LCD monitor, on average they are 30% more efficient.

    Some facts:

If you search for CRT monitors in google and look at the amount of watts they use the wattage of a CRT monitor is on average about 120 - 150 watts.

And depending on the screen size LCD monitors use around
    30 – 65 watts.
