The problem is that in most packaging the food still gets bruised or broken. Think about it. A cucumber. What does that shrinkwrap actually do to protect to cucumber? Nothing!!Angry

Today I say the worst packaging ever. A person i know ordered 1000 washers (For screws and bolts -not dish washers or something like that) off a well known company (Hint they fix screws!!Wink) Guess what the washers arrived in.

First a large thick cardboard box. Second inside the large thick cardboard box was loads of small boxes. Inside the small boxes was the washers inside a plastic bag. I mean for crying out loud!!! who came up with that?Angry

Then to top it all off we found out there were 100 small boxes. Each with 10 washers in each!!!!! 10x100=1000 but with the worlds stupidest packaging!.Ick!

That was definatly the worst packaging I have ever seen!!!

In my opninion the right amount of packaging is one or two layers which are recylable!! All packaging should be recyclable!!!!

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world and could have 'ice-free' summers as early as 2013! This year the Northwest Passage will be navigational for the first time!

I also saw the amount of packaging that was there and the packaging for the screws and botls was just as bad but not as bad as 10 per bag per box

The thing was we could only recycle the boxes at our school because we dont have very good recycling facilities... yet!! our recycling group is working on it but it is slow progress so far. The government could do more to promote recycling in schools though in my honest opinion!!

No, In fact most foods that are shrink wrapped are only packaged in this way because "the consumer wants them that way". Complain to your supermarket weekly. Leave packaging at the checkouts instore. Make petitions, collect suppoters' reciepts and get them to sign them. Together we can get the supermarkets to change their ways.

What a great idea, if we all do this we can make a difference. I saw a programme about this not so long ago and just as BigWind147 said the supermarkets argument about the excess packaging was that the consumer wanted it. Which is rubbish ! And thats what all this packaging creates just more rubbish. As 98% of people interviewed said it was pointless and they just threw it all away when they got home. They also said supermarkets had too much packaging on products that are hard to damage.

:D And yes Daleks are cool

Have any of you looked closely at what the council accepts in their 'green' bins' in  your area. You'll be surpised at what they don't accept.  In Southampton, no waxed paper cartons so no juice boxes, no hard or clear plastic so no trays from meat or veg. or other products even though some have the recyleable label on them. No polystyrene, here are your fruit trays, although can you do anything with polystyrene?. Councils need to update their machines. New products are packaged with hard clear plastic to make the item look good and it's worked. We now know this is not good and must unlearn the process of feeling excited just looking at a new 'thing'. It won't be easy but how many of us have been disappointed at something new when we eventually get all the packaging off.Crying

i no it does seem so wasteful i mean, have you seen some foods that are wrapped up in something and then there is something like cardboard on top so when i see that i think about the poor animals and the earth that has to put up with it but then we might get global warmimg.

Hi jellyfish and welcome to Footprint Friends!

Something caught my eye yesterday in my own fridge!! I have a cucumber without a plastic wrapper Yes and one with a plastic wrapper No.. I can't remember which store these were bought from BUT it made me think... why is a cucumber wrapped in the first place?!!

What do you think? I am only going to buy cucumbers without the wrapper from now on.

Lots of small steps can make Great strides! Founder of Footprint Friends - It's amazing what we can achieve.

Why not take the plastic off of the cucumber and leave it at the store if you have no choice but to buy one which is wrapped.  If enough people did it, they might stop providing them that way.
