Time to say goodbye to bottled water?

Water is all around us, and in many countries is perfectly drinkable from the tap. The money that is spent on the bottled water industry could be spent on providing clean tap water for us all - And we would not have so much plasic bottle waste that ends up in land fill.

I saw this question on the news today.... but what do you think?

Is it time to give to bottled water?

    • I am asking my family to stop using bottled water NOW (11.1%)
    • I never used bottled water in the first place (32.2%)
    • I am giving up bottled water and using a tap filled water bottle (34.4%)
    • I'll try to prepare myself to minimise the need for botted water (14.4%)
    • Bottled water is convenient so I'll keep using it (7.8%)

About the only good use for bottled water is for when natural disasters happen (e.g. floods) and the tap water becomes undrinkable. The use of bottled water is unescicary. However admitadly there is a lot less chemicals in bottled water than in tap water...........Hmm

Wasn't there a big thing a while ago about some bottled water that turned out to be just tap water? Or something stupid like that.Confused

I dont really see the purpose of bottled water to be honest. Whats wrong with the water that comes out the tap....it has to be safe to drink or we there would be serious warnings out there to stop people. In countries such as Africa where there is not access to clean, safe water then charities should aim to provide bottled water which is safe to drink. Also in disaster situations where there again is no access to clean, safe wate.

I agree bottled water is just a waste. Imagine all those materials and energy used to the bottles. Think of all the plastic used to make the bottles and all of that transport to get the water from the filtering plant to the packerging factories and then to the shops.

I used to take plastic bottles when I go hiking but now I have a sack that you fill with tap water that goes into your backpack so it saves a lot of plastic.

And if you really need to use water in plastic bottles please recycle them !

You are right - there was the much talked about launch of Dasani - a water product from Coca Cola.

It is basically purified tap water that is sold at something like 200% profit!!!

I don't think you can get it in the UK any more. for more info check out:

Swampy, I think that water you mentioned above was tested and actually less 'clean' than tap water.

Someone I know who used to work for Southern Water Big Smile told me Hampshire has some of the best natural tap water in the country.

    Blimey pricey bottle of water

It is possible to buy a water purifier for your home that can be used time and time again so purified bottles of water are a waste of money and plastic

bottled water is convinient, so you can bring it places like to sports clubs. I think you should re-use bottles and just fill it up from the tap.Confused

I think you should only buy bottled water in small amounts, so you can re-fill it and if you are just going to throw it away you should recycle it!!! Wink

but people don't recycle for 1 reason or another.............Angry
