Most of the time I will shut my computer down and then turn the screen off but sometimes (mainly if I an just going out or something for a few hours) I use its hibernation mode which (as far as i know) doesnt use any electricity! Also I ensure that I always turn my screen off! Smile

Re: Do you turn of your computer?

I turn off my computer when it is not in use, and even turn it off at the mains if not being used for long periods of time and at night. This saves a good amount of electricity as the machine still use some even when swtiched off.

Hibernation is a cool way of storing where you are without leaving the computer on, it does not use any electric as it saves the way your computer is before it shuts down, so even if you turn it off at the plug it will still come back up where you left off.

More people should do this. Also turning off your screen is a good power saving if you are away from the computer for a short period of time and do not wish to turn it off.

What i find stupid is some people using xp have never heard of hibernation. In standard xp hibernation mode is actually hidden and you need to press -shift- when on the what option do you want to shut down with screen. (Just for those of you who don't know)

In vista its a bit more accessible and visible. I'm not sure if MAC OSX has a hibernation mode at all.........

Either way, there are many ways to turn off a computer. Its just weighing up what your doing and how long your going to leave the computer for against environmental impact.Hmm

    Humn... Hmm

I am not sure how much a computer uses if you leave it on but imagine if you were camping and you only had one battery that charges from the sun....

Would you leave any electrical item on if you were not using it?

Would you leave a torch on just incase? or would you turn it off and save the batteries?
