    wind farms

one of the big issues of erecting wind farms is the fact that they arent to "easy on the eye"

many people beleive that putting up these montrous creatings will affect the view ,of the area they've been put in, in a bad way.

what do you think? do they look good? should the view suffer for the enviroment?

Some people see wind turbines as beautiful things because they are doind a beautiful thing, if they were a nuclear weapon launch unit, few, if any people would tolerate them. As it is, wind farms look like one of the ways forward in the battle against climate change, even if theymay be a blot on a nice piece of landscape.

    What do you think?

i take it you dont like the look of them then Big Smile

i dont think they great but at least they are a stpe in the right direction for new energy sources. i prefer wave energy

wind farms are good and bad. the good bit is that the wind can be turned into electricity to power our homes, but the bad bit it can spoil the view. it's a hard decision whether or not to put up these wind farms.

Surely the best windfarms are offshore?

wind farms could be placed in the water, BUT how are the countries near it going to get the energy from the water? this solves the view problem, but I think it is possible to get the energy from the water can't you? Smile

we are having a wind farm built in our town soon and i think it will be great. I don't think they look great but i would rather have them and have renewable energy rather than using power stations.

I think my area should do something about renewable energy

I think we should get some way to make people more aware  Wilted Flower  of powerstations and what wind farms might do to help the world!!  Wilted Flower

I think that we should have wind farms around the UK. Even though they are not very nice to look at wind farms could benifit the country. It could also cause awareness of power plants :o)

    Re: wind farms

Wind farms have one big drawback. From figures put out last year all the turbines in Britain produced only .09% of our needs. The U.K. produces energy approximately as follows:-  40% from gas, 30% from coal, 24% from nuclear power, 2.25% from bio-fuels,1% from oil,0.35% from hydro-power and only .09% from wind power.

By 2014 only three nuclear stations will be of use. Heysham, Torness, and Sizewell B' leaving a shortfall in our requiremants of over 18%. We have all used electricity as though it was endless. You can imagine how many turbines would be needed. If wind energy produced endless electricity it would be brilliant but the really sad fact is it doesn't.

Personally I like to look of the turbines. They are very graceful. The older models were noisy and not liked at all by the people who had to live near them. One lady farmer in Watchfield Oxfordshire who ran an organic farm was dismayed when five 260 feet turbines were installed. They totally dominated her land. She was reported to have said "Turbines are massive industrial machines and I didn't realise how much the land would change" So it's better to build them away from habitation.

When the wind is still, electricity has to be drawn from the national grid and if the U.K. doesn't have the capability to produce it's own electricity, we use energy from abroad. Nuclear energy from abroad. Considering how many turbines would be needed just to meet our renewables target. It's plain we can't manage on Wind power as much as we'd like to. It's a question of what we have been used to and how we used electricity in the past. Nobody likes the thought of Nuclear Power  Sad but this is what we are using at the moment together with Coal and Gas ( we buy both from abroad as well ) This is why we must all use our energy carefully, wisely. The ideal situation would be to only build houses that use every possible measure in the contruction and function to be almost energy sufficient. Heat pumps built into the foundations, make the most of all the latest solar equipment, insulate everywhere efficiently. etc you get the picture. If you could build your own eco house how would you build it? What would you put in it? Would it be underground? Huh?

Big Smilei think that they are quite kwl in a way...because although some people might think they are unasthetically pleasing.....they are a step in the right direction for renewable energy.

I just think that its ok putting small wind farms up...but this is not going to change the world...people need to think about this...and they should be all over the country.....so we can remove coal power stations.

    Re: wind farms

Wind power technology is changeing all the time. If large land areas could be allocated for multiples of turbines that are not too tall. This would be good. At the moment energy companies have applied to put up big turbines in small numbers close to where people live. This is why so much opposition has been put forward. The farms at sea have large numbers and are really successful. The technology is so new with and the materials the blades and turbines themselves are made of are evolving all the time. Imagine what  wind farms will look like in years to come.
