It was brought to our attention that in fast food restaurants like McDonalds, there are no facilities for customers to deal with waste in an environmentally friendly way. Food waste, polystyrene, card, liquid, plastics and paper all go into the same bin. Just think of the levels of un recyclable waste this generates. It would seem that the fast food industry is being slow to react to basic waste management requirements.

Have your say and vote below. The stats you generate will be sent to McDonalds so don’t miss out on the opportunity to be counted. Perhaps this is something you feel very strongly about – the more votes the more persuasive we will be – so get you mates to become VIP’s and vote too.

    Hi quinny,

I don't eat much fast food either - but we can still have a say, cos there are tons and tons of fast food places and tons of people using them - we need these people to get more aware - if they just chuck things away without thinking they will do the same at home. Next time your in a high street go into one and have a look - you don't have to buy anything Wink

I don't eat fats food often, but i do agree they need to supply recycling facillities in fast food resturants, they're already making people un-healthy with thier food so shouldn't they help the environment??

The difficulty with this is that it is hard for most people to simply put their rubbish in the bin...let alone think about what the item is made of and then placing it in the corressponding bin! So then the restaurants and eaterys will have to employ someone to sort out all the materials! So its a tricky issue! The wider issue is to educate people that everything needs to be recycled!

Mcdonalds in Germany have a very impressive record for recycling and have made significant improvments. But germans are much more aware of the issue, evidence that there needs to be more education! And that we shouldnt only mention Mcdonalds in these campaigns...because the others such as KFC, Burger King, Starbucks, Costas, Eat, and the fashionable places are equally responsible! I wrote to Starbucks and they were reluctant to change thier recycling policy.

I have my own solution...if i cant recyle it at such places..i take it home! Its a bit of a nuissance...but as long as im doing my part.

A solution could be, instead of telling customers where to put different materials, you could have signs telling them where different things goes. You could say that bottles go there, or bags goes there, etc. That way people wouldn't have to think long about where to put things. It would be an easy way for fast fooders to stop wasting, and start recycling.

Hi Malmallin, you are right about education and helping change peoples awareness as that is key, but also I think we should not give up making fast food places think about how they recycle. If the customers raise this issue and speak loud enough they will have to change. Look how the media coverage of health issues surrounding fast food caused menu changes for most of the major brands. Geeked

Hey guys, we need to get more people voting so we can take this to the top and get people to notice this! It doesn't matter if you don't eat much fast food it's the fact they don't recycle that we need to get noticed.

I think if a recycling bin was placed out side most fast food restaurants and take away's there will be more of a chance of them recycling as most of there stock's are delivered in cardboard boxes...

eg.. `KFC' have paper cups  so after there use they can be recycled and also the food boxes and bags are paper so they can be chucked in as well !!

Yes, I would like to see recycling happen in fast food resteraunts, because people around the world are trying their best to help the environment, whilst fast food places like McDonald aren't bothering. They must produce millions of tons of rubbish per week and none of it is being recycled!

Hello Bunny - Welcome to Footprint Friends. Smile

What you say is quite right. People are asked to do their best and made to feel responsible - in all areas of the environmental challenge and yet so many organisations are still not delivering on the basics - like recycling.

At Footprint Friends, we have a link into McDonalds and they are now watching to see how this poll progresses - if they see a big response, we will have a chance of making your feedback count and who knows, perhaps we can influence the speed of change - my biggest request to everyone out there is to VOTE. If you are passionate about these issues and want to get active in demanding change - get your whole school involved and tell everyone you know - signing up is easy and free and polling takes a second.

Lots of small steps can make Great strides! Founder of Footprint Friends - It's amazing what we can achieve.

Yes I definately would. As if Mc Donalds arnt doin enuff to wreck our enviroment. Using big cattle farm that they have to chop down trees to make and think of all of the smoke and waste going into the air when they make and load the food. Whenever I go to McDonalds it makes me feel ill afterwards! lol xx
